The Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2015

To read the full article from the ARRL, click on the title below.  The video explains it pretty good:

The Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2015 -- H.R.1301 in the US House of Representative and S 1685 in the US Senate --  would direct the FCC to extend its rules relating to reasonable accommodation of Amateur Service communications to private land use restrictions. US Rep Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) introduced HR 1301 on March 4 with 12 original cosponsors from both sides of the aisle -- seven Republicans and five Democrats in the US House.  US Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) introduced S 1685 on June 25, with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) as the original cosponsor, into the US Senate.
The Amateur Radio Parity Act would require the FCC to amend its Part 97 Amateur Service rules to apply the three-part test of the PRB-1 federal pre-emption policy to include homeowners association regulations and deed restrictions, often referred to as "covenants, conditions, and restrictions" (CC&Rs). At present, PRB-1 only applies to state and local zoning laws and ordinances. The FCC has been reluctant to extend the same legal protections to include private land-use agreements without direction from Congress.
H.R. 1301 has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Rep Greg Walden, W7EQI (R-OR), chairs that panel's Communications and Technology Subcommittee, which will consider the measure. S 1685 has been referred to the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee's subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation and the Internet, which is chaired by the bill's sponsor, Wicker.
ARRL members are urged to contact their members of both the House and the Senate, asking them to sign on to the bill as a co-sponsor. Route letters for your member of Congress to:

Class - Amateur Radio Technician level

Announcing a new course to become licensed as an amateur radio Technician level

Marvin Match (call sign KA7TPH) will be giving free instruction to prepare for taking the FCC exam for the Technician level in amateur radio (ham radio).  Instruction begins this Thursday, September 24, 7 p.m., at the LDS Pioneer Stake Center, 1401 West 700 So., SLC, in the Relief Society room.  Classes will be approximately two hours long.  Marv anticipates the course will last about eight weeks, depending on the needs of the group.  Marv says, "If someone wants to come in part way through, that's OK too."

I additionally recommend attendance for anyone who already has his/her license in amateur radio already but would like a refresher on the diverse principles and practices for ham radio.  Marv has been active in amateur radio for decades, is an electrical engineer and enjoys the hands-on activities of making radio-related components inexpensively.

Marv will be teaching from the Technician manual by Gordon West and will be selling those at the class for $20 each.  You do not have to purchase a manual to attend the course.
An exam is required for FCC licensing and costs $14 or $15 at the time of testing.

After this Technician course, Marv will hold a course for the General then Extra levels of licensure, if anyone is interested.

Registration for Marv's course is not required.  Come one, come all and let your family, friends, neighbors and community know about this special opportunity to add emergency communications to your arsenal of emergency response preparedness!

Amateur Radio Volunteers Face Fire Threat While Supporting Emergency Communication

08/26/2015  ARRL.ORG

The North-Central Washington town of Republic touts “air you can’t see” on its website. That’s not
the case today. Wildfires in the US Northwest have not only hampered the air quality and visibility, but led to a Level 2 evacuation order in the Ferry County community of about 1000 residents. That could rise to Level 3. Amateur Radio volunteers in Ferry County have been on the front lines of the wildfire emergency there. In Republic, a combination of Ferry County Search and Rescue (SAR), Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and ARES/RACES volunteers have been supporting communication for a shelter housing some 4 dozen evacuees — with more to come, according to Ferry County ARES Emergency Coordinator and RACES Radio Officer Sam Jenkins, WA7EC.

“We are now close to our maximum support level for local volunteers,” Jenkins told State RACES Officer Monte Simpson, AF7PQ, who also is ARRL Western Washington Section Manager. “We are now expecting to operate for several weeks at the Republic High School. The firefighters say they are going to attempt to defend our emergency operations center/emergency shelter at all costs,” Jenkins added. “We are standing our ground.”

SCOUTING FOR FOOD 2015

Scouting for food is an event where Boy Scouts Collect food that will be taken to the Local Food Bank.

In the Law of the Pack, a cub scout gives good will and in the Boy Scout Promise, a boy scout promises to help other people at all times.   By participating in a Scouting for Food program, scouts come a step closer to fulfilling those words.

Across the country, in many councils and districts, thousands of troops and packs with millions of scouts involved collect tens of millions of pounds of food which is distributed to needy neighbors or the Local Food Bank.

Our job as amateur radio operators:

  • Set up a portable ham station at each of the 18 drop points in the Salt Lake valley, including BSA Headquarters and the Truck dispatch area.
  • When you get there contact the District Chairman make sure they know who you are and what you are there for you do not have to Shadow them but make sure they know where you are located if they need you.
  • Before they shut down they need to contact BSA HQ by radio or Cell phone with number of Units number of Adults and number of Boys who participated.

2015 Utah VHF Society Swap Meet

Announcing the 2015
Utah VHF Society Swap Meet

The 2015 Utah VHF Society Swapmeet will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2015 in Farmington at the Davis County Fair Park Legacy Events Center with the doors opening at 9:00 AM.  If you are a vendor and are paying for a table/spot, you may enter at 8 AM.

This is the same place as last year - and the year before.

If you are a paid-up member of the Utah VHF Society, admission is free.

If you are non member, you have two options:

  • $12 at the door and become a member and get a booklet.  The "Family" rate is $20, covering all those who live at the same address.  There is also a "lifetime" membership rate - ask a Utah VHF Society officer for details!
  • $5 at the door (or $3 if you are 12 or under) and you do not get a booklet.

For directions on getting to the Utah VHF Swap Meet, go to this handy, printable page:

You may also refer to the Utah VHF Society Blogspot entry about the 2015 swapmeet - found here!

"Re-Up" your Utah VHF Society Membership before the Swap Meet and avoid the line!

We recommend that you join or "Re-Up" your Utah VHF Society Membership before the swap meet (as in NOW) so that you are on the membership list when you get to the door.  That way, all they need to do is check you off, stamp your hand and give you your nice, shiny UVHFS booklet and let you in while those that didn't do this stand in the other, slower line!

For information about how to join or renew your membership with the Utah VHF Society, go to the "How to Join or Renew UVHFS Membership" page and when there, you can even see when your Utah VHF Society membership expires!

"How do I get my booklet?"

If you don't think that you will be able to get the the Swap Meet - and you have paid (or will have paid) for your Utah VHF Society membership - don't worry:  We will have have a booklet for you - contact the Utah VHF Society president for the best way to get it to you!

We hope to see you at the 2015 swap meet!

Visit utahvhfs.org/ for more details.

Ham Radio Operators Can Help Save Lives In Times Of Crisis

"They are called amateur Ham Radio operators, but the word amateur is an understatement.

Ham Radio operators have to go through training to get their FCC lenience, and it is a hobby that brings them a lot of joy.

Joe L. Luque has fulfilled a life-long dream when he became a Ham Radio Operator, and he says the hobby has given him a continued purpose to live.

"It's a life saver to me because I am a workaholic.. I worked all of my life in the Marine Corps almost 35 years and AT&T for 40 years then retired," said Luque.

Not only is it a hobby for people, but it could also save lives in times of crisis and danger.

Over the years many emergency communication centers throughout the country have relied on Ham operators. When all other forms of communication go down, the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service can still communicate."
